2012 - A VERY SPECIAL YEAR
February ... 2012 ... There are three people who have been making the news already this year. Sister Fa ... Etta James ... and Emmanuel Jal. Etta James passed, and we all saw the tributes to her from Stevie Wonder and Christine Aguilera. She is joining the African American Eclectic Archive. Here
"The Blues is my Business...and Business is Good"
Sister Fa is a women whose work I have been following for a while. She is a tireless fighter for women's rights. She works overtime to bring out the struggle against F.G.M., and the music is good. Senegalese Hip-Hop really has the flavour. Sister Fa is featured at this months Video Views, and is also in the Senegalese Archive. Here
Emmanuel Jal ... The WarChild Project ... aired on UK television Sunday. Emmanuel was filmed by the United Nations as a boy. As a child, he survived a boat accident where 250 plus people drowned, and was then recruited into the Sudan People's Army to fight for what is now South Sudan. He was then smuggled to Kenya, and after many struggles, has become a Hip-Hop Artist. The film is extraordinarily moving as he tells his story in Rap to both Westerners in the U.S.A., and also back in his hometown. He has that Damian Marley vibe .... so it is a privilege to open a Sudan page in The Archive. Here. The link to the Warchild movie is ... http://www.warchildmovie.com/
The story is all the more remarkable for Emmanuel Jal as role model for other former child soldiers! It inspires us all to consider what can be achieved. Have a truly remarkable month! Get involved! Make music ... and care for the ones you truly love!
January ... 2012 We are changing things around a bit ... some good house keeping ... some new ideas... and a lot more music! Firstly ...as we have mentioned more than once in 2011 ... Uranus squares up to Pluto ... and this will release the energy that works for social change. Non-negotiable! Africa, North America, Europe ... are all in need of social policy, new forms of social government and an overhaul of the accountability of the Political Class! Keep yourselves up to date with current Astrology at any of the three sites ... linked at the top of the page.
Musically ... we are going to circuit the 19 West African countries in the Archive, and search out the newest and most recent of the Youth and their music! E-mail us with any info you have. When change comes at the pace that it is doing ... new music arrives real quick. If you are an artist ... get on it!
Lets start in Guinea
"There does seem to be a rising tide of feminism in Africa, making itself most noticeable in music. I would say that the ladies are on the cutting edge of that. More power to them."
There is no finer way to start. An ensemble of Guinean women playing Djembe. Take the whole 10 minutes to listen to this piece and welcome in 2012. There is celebration, an epic journey full of drama, and finally a sense of completion. The power of these women is a joy to witness. May they long continue to work for African Unity. This months Video Views 2012 will feature different drummers and cultures.
I am also going to add Dudu Pukwana to the archive. A man whose music influenced me greatly. He lives on and on through the legacy of his work. Check it out Here!
Finally ... and perhaps most importantly ... if you are a young artist from any of our 19 archived countries ... or indeed living in the Diaspora ...and you have music to promote ...send us the links. I am unavailable some parts of the month, but if you e-mail us a few days before or after the months end ... we will post up your links and help with any promotion. Broadband is on the way. Glo are building a network around the West African coast. Soon come!
Lets make this a year of great achievement, spiritual growth, and community development.
Insha Allah
